Beginner's Fishing Advice

Updated: Jul 23, 2021

Fishing can be a lot of fun; in fact, most beginners learn to fish because of the catch. However, because catching is a process, the better prepared beginners are, the more fish they will capture. Here are some beginning fishing tips to help you catch more fish.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, SAFETY

This translates to angler safety. While most anglers remember goods like sunscreen, rain gear, and a first aid kit, newbies are more likely to miss non-fishing necessities like a bottle of water. For boat voyages, use Dramamine. A fun day of fishing requires being healthy and hydrated.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BOAT FISHING

In addition to always wearing a properly rated PFD when on the water, room is typically restricted in small boats, regardless of the size of the boat. In a boat, reeling your fish into the tip of the rod may be far more difficult than on land.

When reeling in your fish, leave at least a rod's worth of line out and pull the line itself out of the water to help landing your catch simpler. The extra line length prevents your rod from reacting to the flopping fish's movement as you remove the hook, which is especially useful when there isn't enough room to set the rod down.

SALTWATER VS. FRESHWATER

Due to a lack of access to a saltwater shoreline, few beginners are introduced to saltwater fishing right away. As a result, for beginning anglers, freshwater lake fishing is a more usual introduction to boat fishing. Lake fishing is also popular with beginner SUP anglers.

SET IT UP RIGHT

Without a discussion of rigging, no list of beginning fishing advice would be complete. The importance of rigging can be attributed to two factors. First, when you set the hook, a strong, well-tied fishing knot will not break. Second, some knots will make your fly or lure swim like natural bait.

However, only if you practice with the proper fishing knot for your lures. A Turle Knot, for example, is an excellent fixed knot for making your dry flies drift properly when fly fishing. Rigging is, of course, only one element of the puzzle.

SWIM YOUR LURE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Consider how your bait glides in the water naturally and try to replicate it with your rod tip and reel speed. Pull up on the tip of your rod and reel down to gather the slack while maintaining your bait in contact. If you just cast and reel as quickly as possible, your lure will not seem natural, and you'll be lucky if you receive a tug. You'll get more takes if you swim your lure according to the fishing spot.

TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH

Top water fishing is enjoyable for beginners because they can see both the bait and the bite. If it doesn't work, a crucial fishing tip for novices is to know when to switch techniques.

Casting your bait deeper (or higher if drift fishing) until you find the fish is one tactical change. When bait fishing, add or subtract weight, switch to a sink tip or sinking line when fly fishing, and use a jig, spoon, or metal-lipped jerk bait.

If changing lures and depths doesn't improve your position, changing places is another tactical option. To find the fish, move about. A fan cast should be used to cover the water. Make a few casts to the left of you. Make some in front of the house.

Then, to your right, make some more. Move down to a new fishing place if you've covered the area, tried different depths, and used a different lure and still haven't had a bite

PATIENCE

To catch more fish, fish where the fish are. Isn't it self-evident? Indeed, figuring out "where the fish are" is rarely as simple as placing a baited hook near a clump of underwater weeds. Throughout the day, be prepared to switch lures, hooks, weights, knots, and even methods.

Remember that fishing is a process, and the more you catch, the better your method is. To become an expert at catching fish, read fishing tips on casting techniques.
