Essential Skills for a Baseball Player
Baseball is a sport that demands a great level of ability to perform well. Athletic abilities will help a player compete against other top players, but the specific baseball skills of hitting, throwing, and catching require a lot of work and practice. Many of the game's best hitters don't have great speed or strength, but they all have excellent eye-hand coordination. What are the essential skills when playing baseball?
Hitting
Hitters who can drive the ball over the fence, like Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, are idolized, but many hitters who don't hit home runs on a regular basis can be just as valuable to their teams.
Timing, hand-eye coordination, and confidence are required to consistently hit the ball. Batting practice is a great way to improve these skills. When standing at the plate, batters must be balanced and force their hands through the ball with all of their strength and momentum.
Fielding
Athleticism, aggression, timing, and coordination are all required when catching and fielding a baseball. Fielding ground balls necessitates a player's quick arrival on the field, placement of his body in front of the ball, and catch of the ball out in front of him.
Fly ball catching involves quickness, anticipation, and coordination. To learn how to field consistently, fielders must catch hundreds of ground balls and fly balls in practice.
Throwing
Arm strength, balance, and timing are all required for good ball throwing. The shoulder is a fragile area of the body, and the four rotator cuff muscles that allow the baseball to be thrown overhand are readily broken.
Baseball players must strengthen their arms by throwing with good technique on a regular basis. This means that when throwing, players must take a step toward the target and direct their momentum toward the target.
Base running
Many athletes and coaches neglect this aspect of their game. It takes more than speed to be a strong base runner. Speed is vital, but recognizing the path to take, the arm power of opposing outfielders, and the game scenario are more important.
A good base runner will listen to coaches on the base paths for assistance, but will make the final decision to run or stop based on his own understanding.
