Ronaldo nets hat-trick as Portugal thrash Luxembourg - World Cup Qualifiers round-up
Portugal is inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo's 58th career hat-trick; Albania against Poland and England's 1-1 tie with Hungary are overshadowed by unrest in Group I; After a late win in the Faroe Islands, Scotland is 90 minutes away from the play-offs, while Northern Ireland's World Cup aspirations have been destroyed in Bulgaria.
Portugal trounced Luxembourg 5-0 in World Cup Qualifying Group A, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick.
Ronaldo scored two penalties in the first 13 minutes, then added a late header to complete his 58th career trifecta for club and country, bringing his total to 115 international goals.
As Portugal fell a point behind group leaders Serbia, who they will meet in the last round of fixtures, Bruno Fernandes and Palhinha both scored.
In the eighth minute, Bernardo Silva was fouled, prompting the first penalty, and five minutes later, Ronaldo was fouled inside the area and converted the second penalty. After Andr Silva invaded the area too early, he had to reclaim it.
Ronaldo also hit the post before Fernandes, a Manchester United teammate, made it 3-0 with just 18 minutes remaining.
Palhinha added a fourth goal in the 69th minute, just seconds after Ronaldo came near to scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick that was saved by Luxembourg goalie Anthony Moris.
However, the man who broke Iranian Ali Daei's men's international goalscoring record last month pulled even closer when he completed his hat trick three minutes from time.
After beating Azerbaijan 3-1 in Belgrade, Portugal advances to a straight shootout with Serbia for first place.
