Neymar earned 400 million euros in his first season at PSG
The financial details of Neymar's first year at Paris Saint-Germain have been released, and the sums are staggering.
According to a source obtained by MARCA, the Brazilian forward earned a staggering 400 million euros in his first season in France as a result of various commercial contracts and the global impact he had upon his arrival in Paris.
PSG has justified the amount reported in an El Mundo article, claiming that signing the player was an investment.
On the day Neymar was introduced as a new addition, club president Nasser Al Khelaifi declared, "We'll make more money off Neymar than we've spent."
In the two hours after his shirt was made available for purchase, the official club shop had made almost half a million euros.
The club also claims that they would not have been able to strike lucrative deals with Italian brand Replay or Nike Jordan without Neymar's presence. The club's social media following has also increased dramatically.
In his first season in France, television audiences grew by 25%, and Disney Channel has announced that they have purchased the rights to broadcast Ligue 1 matches in Brazil, which are currently televised on ESPN and Fox Sports.
"Neymar's arrival undoubtedly gave PSG and the French league another dimension," said Yoann Godin, Ligue 1's director of international development.
"His first match is one of the most-watched in football history".
According to those in Paris, his arrival made PSG the world's second-most profitable club, citing a Deloitte research that ranks them among the world's top five most powerful clubs.
If it hadn't been for Neymar, Messi would not have come.
Many people also believe that Lionel Messi, Neymar's former Barcelona teammate and close friend, would not have moved to France if the Brazilian wasn't at PSG.
